We also provide training to professionals who work with children and adults who are visually impaired. A one-day assessment can evaluate the best assistive technology solutions for an individual, and we find that trying the devices is often the best method to determine what is most effective. Solutions may include screen enlargement, speech output, voice input, personal note-taker or a combination of devices. For those who have never used a computer before and need additional time, one-on-one training or one-to-two week course can be helpful. Two-Week Basic Computing For individuals who are beginning computer users or are new to using computers with assistive technology, this two-week program provides basic training in the use of the Windows operating system, Internet Explorer to browse the Web, Outlook to send and receive email, and Microsoft Word to write and edit documents. It is also appropriate for those wishing to make the transition from low vision tools like screen magnification software to screen readers.
For individuals who are intermediate users, this four-week program includes all Microsoft Office applications, including college students. Navigate the Windows desktop, create shortcuts, access menu bars and ribbons, interact with dialog boxes, manage files and folders, and open and close programs. Create, edit, and save correctly formatted Word documents. Open and navigate accessible PDF files with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, adjust Adobe’s accessibility settings, and, for JAWS users, open less accessible PDFs with JAWS Convenient OCR.
